On the occasion of the LCILP 2nd Annual Conference, Professor Dr Nayla Comair-Obeid was invited to give the keynote address.
Professor Dr Comair-Obeid focused on the long established tradition of arbitration and other ADR mechanisms used in the Middle East, which are now being repurposed to resolve energy disputes. This tradition of out of court dispute resolution was also compared with that of Islamic and Sharia law.
The speech addressed the innovations relating to energy dispute, those for example resulting from the new discoveries of natural oil in Egypt and in Lebanese/Cypriot/Israeli waters. There was additionally an emphasis on the ability for crises to produce innovations. In situations of dispute in crises, actors in the Middle East should be encouraged to promote peaceful settlement, which is a position which the CIArb currently and will continue to promote.
