Founding Partner Professor Dr Nayla Comair-Obeid has been appointed as a member of China’s International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court.
The First and Second International Commercial Court of the Supreme People’s Court in China (“CICC”) were established on 29 June 2018 in Shenzhen and Xi’an respectively. The CICC’s objective is to “try international commercial cases fairly and timely in accordance with the law, protect the lawful rights and interests of the Chinese and foreign parties equally, create a stable, fair, transparent, and convenient rule of law international business environment.”
The International Commercial Expert Committee was established by the Supreme People’s Court to ensure the fair and effective operation of the CICC. The Committee consists of the most distinguished experts who are esteemed in relevant international and domestic legal fields. The main roles of the members of the Committee, entrusted by the CICC, include:
-mediating in international commercial disputes and produce mediation agreements when parties so agree;
-providing expert opinions in respect of applicable foreign laws and international treaties in cases heard by the Chinese courts; and
-giving advice on the future development of the CICC.
